The problem of patriotic education in the scientific discourse

Abstract

The article clarified and deepened the concept of patriotism and patriotic education from the point of view of leading native scholars in the context of state normative documents that regulate this pedagogical activity in the Ukrainian education system. The relevance of the problem of patriotic education explained by necessity to protect the integrity and independence of the state, to ensure its comprehensive development.

The authors trace the evolution of the problem in the historical aspect. It has been noted that the concept of patriotism, defined by researchers from the very beginning of its understanding, as a valuable social feeling. Content of which, love of country and willingness to subordinate own interests to state.

The dualistic view of patriotism as a phenomenon of civic consciousness, which based on «synthesis of patriotism and cosmopolitanism» (O. Sukhomlynska). Supported and  explained at the personal level as the ability to avoid contradictions between social needs and individual interests. It has been pointed that the bureaucratic patriotism, which is typical for government officials, who become not only hostages of the state, but also spokesmen for its supremacy in the lives of citizens. Ivan Franko called such persons «patented patriots», alluding to their official feelings for the Homeland.

It has been emphasized tendency to humanize the concept of patriotism, which moves from political-ideological or military-patriotic rhetoric to the sphere of public consciousness, acquires a personal character (O. Sukhomlynska).

Pointing out that patriotism increasingly understood as a personal spiritual value (V. Sukhomlynskyi). The authors connect this concept with the definition of «sense-values» (I. Bekh), which means selfless and sacrificial attitude to the Homeland.
