Semantic and syntactic approach to poli-predictive construction research in academician K.Shulzhuk’s works

Abstract

The study analyzes the issue of compound complex sentence in academician K. Shulzhuk’s works. The author points out the wides of scientific issues and researcher’s innovative approach to these constructions interpretation as a subsystem of compound sentence. It is defined researcher’s contribution to the development of Ukrainian syntactic science. The author emphasizes on the fact that the prospects of semantic-syntactic approach to sentence units research in the second half of the 19^th century caused the necessity to analyze sentence as a unit that except of formal structure has certain semantic structure and communicative organization. Functional approach intensification gave the possibility to develop the consistent hierarchy of syntactic units that was absent in Ukrainian linguistics at that time. Theoretical and practical study of poly-predicative constructions also became complicated by the absence of unified terminology. Syntactic theory development at the end of the 19^th century needed systematic formal-grammatical and semantic-syntactic analysis of the poly-predicative constructions, determination their characteristic features as a subsystem of compound sentence, research relations of their formal-grammatical and semantic structure. In Ukrainian linguistics academician K. Shulzhuk’s work of Compound Complex Sentences in the Ukrainian Language became the first special research where the structure of such sentence units was characterized in its entirety basing on different functional and stylistic kinds of the Ukrainian modern standard language. Theoretical focus of academician K. Shulzhuk’s linguistic contribution, wides of language context of researched phenomena gave an opportunity to influence on Ukrainian syntactic science in a significant way.
