Semantic features of phraseological units in ukrainian and english: comparative aspect
Abstract
The article is devoted to the comparative analysis of phraseological units in Ukrainian and English. The mental characteristics of these ethnic groups of these languages are analyzed on the examples of phraseology. The relevance of the study of phraseological units as an important factor in deepening and expanding interlingual and intercultural contacts between peoples is proved. The range of translation difficulties due to differences in imagery, national and cultural labeling of phraseological units in the compared linguistic and cultural traditions is determined. The article presents a comparative study of semantic groups of phraseology, in particular those that reflect the geographical and historical conditions of people's development. Ethnonyms, zoosemic and botanical elements, English somatic phraseologies, phraseologies with meteorological component are analyzed.
The article investigates that the value pictures of the world of both English and Ukrainians contain common key concepts, which can be illustrated by the example of phraseological units of English and Ukrainian languages. However, each nation has its own unique value priorities, which have been formed historically and may be specific in comparison with other cultures. In general, it was found that the phraseological structure of a language reflects the cultural identity, national character of the people, their social identity in general. In addition, phraseological units are a kind of mirror of culture, reflecting the social consciousness of people, lifestyle, traditions, customs, value system. That is why they are valuable material for studying the cultural identity of a particular language culture.
